Colorado Institute of Sports Medicine (CISM) – Golf Performance Program

Who performs it:

Dr. Tyler Meyers PT, DPT with Colorado Institute of Sports Medicine (CISM) is certified through the Titleist Performance Institute to perform physical screening and video swing analysis with the goal of developing a more efficient golf swing for the player.

What is the purpose of a golf physical screen and video swing analysis:

At CISM, TPI certified members believe there is not ONE way to swing golf club, but there is one EFFICIENT way to swing for every golfer based on what they can physically do.

Most players may not be able to replicate the professional golfers, so we develop a swing for that player that is consistent and powerful.

To determine an efficient swing, a golfer must be golfer must be screened to assess:

  • Swing mechanics and biomechanics

  • Physical fitness

  • Movement quality

  • Current health

  • Client health history

What does the initial evaluation consist of:

When a player comes into CISM for an initial evaluation the session will begin with a video swing analysis that will assess for “The Big Twelve Swing Characteristics” that may impact swing efficiency. Following the video swing analysis, the swing speed of the player will be analyzed. Then a golf fitness screen will be completed to assess the player’s body-swing connection.

What happens after I complete my screening:

The results are taken from the screen and the provider creates an individualized plan for that player. The plan may consist of:

  • Fitness training

  • Physical therapy and treatment

  • Coaching of swing mechanics and biomechanics

  • Nutrition

  • Mental strategy

What are the swing characteristics assessed for in the video swing analysis?

The most common swing characteristics that can lead to mechanical inefficiencies in your golf swing, and put you at greater risk for injury are:

  • S-posture, C-posture, loss of posture, flat shoulder plane, early extension, over-the-top, sway, slide, hanging back, reverse spine angle, casting/scooping, and chicken winging

What are the components of the physical fitness screen?

The most common physical fitness factors that have a direct correlation to the body-swing connection and an efficient golf swing are:

  • Setup posture, pelvic tilt, pelvic rotation, torso rotation, overhead deep squat, toe touch, 90/90, single leg balance, lat test, lower quarter rotation, seated trunk rotation, bridge with leg extension, cervical rotation, forearm rotation, wrist hinge, wrist flexion/extension

What happens after my first visit?

Following the initial assessment more sessions will be scheduled with a TPI-certified provider to improve upon the specific components assessed during the video swing analysis and physical fitness screen. Every fifth visit another video swing analysis will be performed to assess progress.
